Helmut,
 There are two modules for the scsi controller.
one is called aic7xxx, and the other other is aic7xxx_old.

I am reasonably sure that is their names - the _old subscript is correct.

You may get more success out of the _old version.
alias scsi aic7xxx_old 
in /etc/modules.conf should select the other one.
