Thanks, it not so much that 2.6 does it differently but Debian does. My first and aging instinct was to do something in /etc/modules.conf, but the comments there told me dire things about that. Sometimes experience slows you down... Amazingly enough "man modules" is quite explicit. For once the most obvious FM to R was exactly the right one, I just was expecting anything so simple...
