An idea of the number of members who are coming would be appreciated. Let's consider the changes in the Linux world since the CLUG was started. Linux is no longer the exclusive preserve of dedicated geeks, after all Mandrake virtually installs itself in 20 mins or less on current hardware. Installfests just to get Linux installed are no longer a necessity. Forgetting the hassles caused by the shortcomings of the rpm format, which have been largely worked around in various ways, installing applications and their upgrades is usually as simple as falling off a log. There are now myriads of different ways of getting help with your Linux system. A irc channel on irc.freenode.net together with a mail list is now available for almost every app. or distribution of any consequence. Linux's very sucess has had the effect that LUGs are no longer needed for the dedicated support of Linux per se. Therefore I'd like to see our's transformed into a social club for geeks, while keeping The List which is, of course, the central core of the whole exercise. Perhaps we could keep the March installfest going as long as it is needed and spend the money earned there funding the social activities? Folks like the idea of a Free Beer every now and then? > On Thu, 2004-01-22 at 01:26, Nick Rout wrote: > > maybe we can discuss future club activities over a beer and a meal, > > nothing like a bit of alcohol to get everyone saying what they really > > think LOL -- Sincerely etc. Christopher Sawtell NB. This PC runs Linux. If you find a virus apparently from me, it has forged the e-mail headers on someone else's machine. Please do not notify me when this occurs. Thanks.
