I have used appletalk on the campus network in the past, to store files on my linux box which I created on a mac in one of the labs. Setting up an appletalk server on Linux was reasonably easy. There were a number of appletalk versions at some stage which didn't work properly and which the mac client couldn't connect to. Downgrading to the previous one fixed that. All on SuSE (and no, the appletalk wasn't broken by SuSE, it was the appletalk version itself which was broken). Haven't used it for 3y or so, and won't again now that I have my own film scanner.
