Have you tried using Swat to set up your Samba
(assuming you did the "shovelware install")

Just enable in Xinet.d
(edit the file /etc/xinet.d/swat and change the disabled line to no)
and restart Xinetd

Then point your browser at http://127.0.0.1:901

Log on as root, then you have a graphical setup for Samba with a help
system.
