it, the sdbN don't make sense so just the /dev/sdb.



Yes, I tried each device in turn: /dev/sda, /sda1, /sda2, ... /sdb, /sdb1, ... etc.




I haven't run mkfs on anything yet, since there appears to be nothing to run it against.

It would also help if you gave more useful info than just "doesn't
work" or "doesn't mount". What's logged in /var/log/messages about it?
