"only 5 GB"? That should be plenty if you just want to have a play with linux and some apps. My root partition has 3 GB, and I am pretty happily working with heaps of different applications, including bulky things like StarOffice. I have /home on a separate partition. As long as you do not have to get into processing movies or long audio files, it should be fine with 5 GB.
