This sort of approach works very well (I too use an RDP client on Linux
for 99% of my work at work!). It allows a local Linux, but you'll tend
to be up for Windows server licences, TS CAL's, Office licences etc -
and popping Citrix on top just adds more cost.

So, yes, its fine and a better way to run Windows, but if no-one's
actually consciously using Linux or OSS apps, and still paying a lot of
money to MS - then it's probably far from what you first had in mind...

Subject: Re: Timaru Council use of Linux and Citrix

Hi-ho,

If it's any help I , and have had from time to time users doing the same
thing. We run a mix of Windows 2003 and 2000 servers, with linux,
windows 98, xp and 2kpro workstations..

For the linux clients we used 'thinstation' which is a distro specific
to the task.. Works fine for RDP, and I see reports of it doing well
for Citrix.

No citrix though, as TS on windows 2003 does everything we want without
the extra layer of fiddling..

Given I work for a council (Selwyn District) I can probably get you a
contact down at Timaru if you strike out on the list...

Cheers, Chris H.
