vmware-workstation cannot set virtual drive to ide

I want to set up a virtual hard drive in vmware 4 to be ide. I can set
the virtual cdrom to ide, but cannot for the virtual hard drive. Any
clues as to why? (host os is gentoo, guest is to be linux).
