Hi folks,There are two main reasons for filtering:
In the next step towards world domination, I've registered a new domain with freeparking, with the idea of hosting services on my linux box.
However, I went about this in slightly the wrong order! Having opened port 80 in the router, I tried to connect to it. I can't. So I got out my trusty port sniffer, and, lo and behold, I find that only ftp and telnet are open, and http is filtered by ihug.
So... does anyone know of an isp that offers a slightly more
enlightened approach to use of the internet??? After all, I am paying
for it!
1. Some ISPs block specific ports to protect against intrusions. I remember that Ihug used to be one of those that did, but it's not a very common setup nowadays.
2. If you are on a Jetstarter connection this is a common condition, that you will not run any servers on it. Many ISPs apply some kind of filtering, traffic shaping or blocking to traffic types commonly run on servers, like p2p.
In the second case just upgrade your connection to a package that allows you to run a server.
