For folk who say 'this is easy in windows, why not in linux'Othertimes, try: "are you sure?"
the answer is usually 'try kde instead of gnome'.
Media Player (album info)
do you mean track/artists listings for a CD? kscd gives me this by enabling cddb
What I mean is that you can search for Amazon type information (album info, artist profile, tracks, review) from All Music Guide, and once related you then have access to news, bios, other releases, lyrics, and related music.
If you want to see an example, use head to Media Player's Media Library, right click on a song an choose Find Album Info, and after you've gone through that, play the song and have a look around the Info Center.
I really was surprised by this feature, as it showed Microsoft attempting to do more than other competitors. In an effort to keep people using Media Player naturally, but it's a good drawcard.
Photoshop vs The Gimp (oh all right, I just want my industry standard,
wider range of knowledge)
have you tried the latest gimp versions? gimp 2 is beautiful.
I have played around with it. The danger I face is that if I attempt to more fully learn how to use Photoshop and The Gimp I will be in danger of being less effective than if I focused only on one of them.
Winamp visualisations (geiss, milkdrop)
pass
Ooh, they're perrty. Have a look at screenshots from http://www.geisswerks.com/ I wannit on my Linux dammit!
3D Games (no root)
what has root to do with 3d games?
There are still too many cases where you have to play it from a root accout, which I despise using unless absolutely necessary.
Printing
cups/kprinter is a nice combo
That they are, leaving many different print management systems still on the machine to confuse and bemuse. To people coming to grips with Linux, as I was some months ago, it's a minefield tempting me to just give up.
Audio (multiple sounds)
don't often have probelms with this. which kernel/sound system are you using?
I was using arts, and found that gaim would go nuts with notifications between songs, instead of as the events took place. Sure an answer it to turn off gaim sound events, but that's just a copout. I want gaim notifications to be heard as and when they occur, even when I am playing music.
Shockwave Flash (slow in Linux)
never noticed that
I have on many occasions. It's a pain in the ass to close off Linux to go back to Windows just because I want to properly see something on www.milkandcookies.com
When trying to fix it I found many people with the same issue but no apparent means to resolve it.
ifilm.com movies
can't answer that sorry :-)
www.fark.com often points to many interesting things on that site. Goodbye Linux, hello Windows if I ever want to watch them. I think that it's something to do with Windows Media Player compatibility.
How do the video reports at ananova.com work for you?
Is it worthwhile expanding the list so we can knock them off when
they're as easy (to setup too) in Linux?
