I wonder wheter all this is necessary. on my rh system the only entries in the 
equivalent for a dhcp wired card are:

DEVICE=eth0
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=dhcp

I therefore wonder if the netmask, broadcast, ipaddr, network entries should 
be commented out. If, for example, dhcp wanted to allocate an address in a 
different subnet, these entries might confuse it.

the config file lists an wireless_key but this states that it is off. I am not 
sure if the two are connected.

some distro makers have adopted a system called zeroconf, which seems to be a 
pig if it goes wrong. In this case it is assigning a 169.254 ip address, 
probably because dhcp is not obtaining an address.
