It would be a waste of time using an encrypting protocol (like scp) if the machines are networked in a "safe enough" manner. How about using netcat and tar? tar sends out data asynchronously, so the total time would be minimised. desktop$ cd emptydir; nc -l -p 1234 | tar xf - laptop$ cd fulldir; tar cf - * | nc desktop 1234 (test before use!) -jim
