Hi again Just to let everyone know I was able to tar up the data and copy it across to my desktop, format the drive and remount it, then copy and untar the data again. All seems to be working perfectly, and I now have the speed and security that I needed. Portage has a bit of a barf if it can't set permissions and time etc.
I suppose now maybe the question is ext3, xfs, jfs or reiserfs? But that's a different thread entirely :o) The reason I asked was just to see if there was some neat trick I didn't know on how to do this. Jim's suggestion of netcat certainly was a neat trick and I'll look into it.
