Agreed, the problem should not have occurred. I wonder if Debian, which does a complete wipe and reset of /tmp on startup, would have fixed the problem silently? I do get annoyed at the RH /tmp semantics, but that is often because I am more used to Deb!

It was actually /var/tmp. Isn't that usually a bit more persistent than /tmp? Not sure. In any case, no programs should be chmoding it willy nilly. Note that my wife, indeed all of us, have accounts. We don't run as root. That's a no-no.
