I've been using the Vera fonts for ages, since they were opened by
Bitstream and GNOME, and they are a lovely collection of typefaces.

For those who do not know, the Vera fonts are similar to Vendana et al.
on Windows: they are designed as on-screen fonts that are readable and
legible at low resolutions. Bitstream released the fonts as Free
Software â under the auspices of the GNOME project[1] â so you can use
PfaEdit/FontForge[2] to edit them and add your own glyphs to your hearts
content.

There are three typefaces in the Vera family: Sans, Serif, and Sans
Mono. I personally do not like using sans-serif typefaces as a terminal
font, monospace or no, so I use FreeMono[3] for my terminal face. Vera
Sans and Vera Serif go together beautifully with FreeMono, making quite
a pretty desktop.
