*twitch* I've installed osCommerce before. No, turning the option off later will break the application.
There are people here who know osC well enough - I've only written payment modules for it. Perhaps one of them will take pity on you ... :-) Or perhaps you could look at google? It turns up, as the first match, a discussion about how to get register_globals enabled only for the osC site itself, and not for the rest of the web server.

BTW Don, instead of just saying "something broke" couldn't you just try to say "thing thing here broke"? It saves a lot of time, you know ...
