Out of interest, does this "usb-to-serial" adapter you speak of: a) help your serial device (eg. mouse) fake being a usb device, OR b) help your usb port fake being a serial port ? There have been several fine explanations so far which have left me with the distinct impression there are some fundamental reasons why it wouldn't work.
