Why would you want to? Log on as a normal user, then open a terminal and su to root.
there is a section in System->Configuration->KDE->System->Login Manager
One of the tabs lists hidden users.
Untick the root user.
Then you can log in as root. When you do you get a really perty bright red desktop.
Be very very careful in this mode!
