I want to get linux up and running on a fujitsu stylistic 2300 touchpad
device. These things have a hard drive, screen, usb port, twin pcmcia,
serial, parallel, ps/2. modem, irda, audio line in/out and modem (not
telepermitted), no floppy drive, no cd. I could take the hard drive out
and use a 2.5-->3.5 converter, and do it in my desktop. However that
would not satisfy my desire to get it booted without using a
screwdriver.

There don't seem to be any options in the bios to boot off a usb or
pcmcia drive.

Any bright ideas?

This machine is destined as portable music player, streaming mp3 over
wireless from my main box. The server box is running slimserver
(http://www.slimdevices.com/) and will stream to any device that will
play a streamed mp3. The stream is controlled via http or telnet. The
stylistic is presently running win95 with pen services. I installed a
browser and winamp lite and it runs well enough, but its just the wrong
os....

Use one of the pcmcia slots for a network card, and install over that? It all depends on what options there are for boot devices in the bios.

As ou'll not be doing this on a regular basis, I recommend the screwdriver approach ):
