The man pages are divided into the following sections:
Section 1 User Commands
Section 2 System Calls
Section 3 Subroutines
Section 4 Devices
Section 5 File Formats
Section 6 Games
Section 7 Miscellaneous
Section 8 System Administration
Section 9 Kernel

The (8) means that e2fsck is a System Administration command, as opposed to 
e2fsck the game[1] which is in section 6.

If you had an entry for e2fsck in sections 6 and 8, you can type:
man 6 e2fsck
for the game instructions, and 
man 8 e2fsck
for the filesystem check instructions.
