What time server should I use given I'm using an xtra connection?
ntp.public.otago.ac.nz

That's the nearest publically available one to us in Christchurch.

Hey -- If any of you want to set up a publically available stratum 2 server in Christchurch, I am quite happy to provide the stratum 1 feed. I generally provide the feed for large groups/companies and there are a few ISP's on the list.(mostly up north). (no - not xtra :-)

Just make sure that the hostname has something like
linux_is_great.linux.nz in the name :-) :-)

The university of Canterbury has a stratum2 ntp link ... I am not
sure how public it is.... It does all of campus and I thought provided
off-campus as well.

The cost of the link is not high and for stratum 2 there is no extra hardware.

Does xtra have a time server does anyone know?
No, they are a lazy / ignorant / clue-less bunch of sods who do not know how to tell the time yet. :-) only half in jest.
