BTW I don't think the list has an overwhelming majority of gentoo users, just a vocal minority. Distros are like a lot of stuff in life, horses for courses. Some people like mandrake, some people like debian, some people like gentoo, some people even like windows. I happen to like the way dependencies and compile options are handled on gentoo, and the "versionless" nature of the OS [1]. Its downside is *some* instability and a bit of command line futzing when stuff doesn't work. OTOH those can be strengths too, in getting the latest versions of some software, and understanding your system better. YMMV. Sorry i didn't mean to get into a long justification.
