OK I followed Robert's advice and used scribus, with some customised picture frames, then printed from there. Came out rather nicely. Now to find a small guillotine to tidy them up, and maybe print some cutting guide marks on the background.
Now to stop myself doing the same each time, I'll create a template that I can just drop pics into. After that I might have a play with Imagemagick, which is a very handy package, and try to create some scripts to automate this. Some pics are in 3:2 format, ie translate nicely to a 6x4 format, some are in 4:3 format, which suits a computer screen, but is not so good for fitting in traditional pocket style photo albums.
