Hello,

I have a linux box and a modem (in Christchurch). I am connected to the
internet, but I don't use the modem as I have cable. I have a friend
elsewhere in Christchurch with a linux box but no modem, no cable and no
ISP. I want to get a modem for my friend so he can dial my number, have
the phone answered by my modem, and send some files to me. That's it. No
web surfing, no mail, no sharing of my cable, nothing else. Just dial up
occasionally and give me some data.

I have dipped into the Modem HOWTO which describes how to get a login
prompt on another PC over a modem link, but I don't think that's quite what
I want. I think I want my friend's PC to be on my local subnet, so he can
use ftp to send the files to my PC (after manually or automatically using
the modem to dial my number).

Has anyone done this, or something like this? Am I thinking about the
problem the wrong way? It shouldn't be hard, but I'm not quite sure how to
phrase my Google search.

Thanks in advance,

Andy
