Modem Initialisation

When I use KPPP, the modem initialises for 65 seconds then proceeds to  
dial/connect/logon in a further 30 seconds (well mostly, but that's  
another thread). What is Mandrake 10 doing behind the scenes for 65  
seconds that used to take Win2k 5 seconds. I am using all the default  
settings assigned by KPPP to my Dynalink external modem. I have a list of  
AT commands and have experimented without any joy. Should I be looking  
elsewhere?
