Good morning,

Last night I started what I thought would be a short and painless task - adding
some more users to my computer so that my flatmates could use it.
The relatively painless parts:
- modifying /etc/fstab so that everyone except me and root only had read access
to my fat32 partitions (photos etc)
- adding the users with the appropriate groups etc

I wanted to set up a basic Gnome setup which will be tailored to what they need
to use.
I thought I'd start with what I had for myself and remove a few things which
they wouldn't need/use. I copied my home directory into one of the new users
home directory (literally, and then went back and copied the contents instead),
removing all my files which weren't required and set all the permissions to the
permissions of the new user. (all being the permissions of the entire home
directory recursively, oops - fixed) and then tried to login as the new user in
GDM. This caused some problems as Gnome started to load but didn't get very
far. After some fiddling I cctually managed to get this to work and went about
removing some icons from the starterbar gdesklet and removing a few extraneous
gdesklets. Once I got all this working, I tried to copy this users home
directory into the other 2 users I wanted to create, changing permissions etc,
but I just couldn't get it to work.
I spent about 3 hours trying to get it to work and no luck as yet. Current
symptoms are:
splash screen appears, first two icons appear on splash screen (second one is
metacity, can't remember what first one is) and then it just sits there. If I
wait long enough a couple more including the panel appear but I never actually
see a panel.

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to get past this without
manually creating the gnome setup from scratch?

Thanks,
Luuk
