If 98 can handle those adapters fine, then use them. My gut feeling is that under Linux it'll be more hassle than it's worth. Tell him to just borrow an ethernet card for an evening. If it's not a once-off event, buy an ethernet card.

I've had no problem with a random usb/utp thingy I found in a cupboard recently. Just worked under Debian sid.
