Looks good. Under Gnome. I'm thinking that /opt/gnome/lib/gnome-applets/charpick_applet2 is probably the binary. The trick would be to get a Gnome applet to run in the KDE panel. After some googling and fruitless experimentation (including ksystraycmd) I've reached the tentative conclusion that Gnome and KDE are just too different to allow this sort of cross-pollination.
I'm not going to change window manglers just for one applet, but will bear it in mind as I continue to ponder which to use in future.
