That's not likely to solve anything unless the cause of the problem can
be rectified first. Was there an error during installation which you

Poke around in /var/log/YaST2/ which has the yast logfiles.
ping is in package iputils

You have those installed? (Names as on 8.2, 9.1 could have other package
names)

What are the machine specs? RAM? disk? Were there out of memory errors
during install? Are there disk errors?

Does rpm -qa|sort give a sane-looking list of packages?
