the different colours in the non-local machine (www) show what time was spent preprocessing (purple), transmitting and receiving over the network (salmon pinky) and actually compiling. (green)
on gentoo you have to run it as
DISTCC_DIR=/var/tmp/portage/.distcc distccmon-gnome
