Yes, it was a thread with Yuri, who got one of those second hand. At the time we managed to establish that the chipset does indeed provide a real hardmodem, i.e. implements a proper hardware serial port. Unfortunately there are none for sale in NZ (let me know if there are), at least not usually. It seems to me that the lucent-venus ships are definitely more expensive than the softmodem chips, and the way the world works that means a k.o (pretend to be an average PC pleb[1] and ask yourself "what more do I get for the extra money?", answer: "nothing"). If we wanted to sell any modems at fests, any softmodem which we have tested and function well will do the trick. People wouldn't want any more, and try and gauge for what reason people want Linux on their computers. If it is because it costs nothing, then they're likely not able to spend any much money on more hardware. I see tastech has lucent PCI modems for $25, and I expect them to be PnG (plug-n-go). Incidentally, I'd be interested in a modem, prefrably internal, which has decent Linux driver support for voice(!) functions (fax and data aren't generally problematic). Turning it into an answerphone could be fun. Changing the topic to SuSE 9.1, yast has very decent-looking functions for setting up faxing and answerphones by the simple means of entering some typical details like your fax station ID. Man that rocks! Unfortunately it seems to be only for capi4linux, and ISDN is a non-entity in NZ. Man that sucks (on both counts)... :(( ISDN likely has better APIs to implement this sort of thing with.
