The vertical distance between 2 lines of text is also controlled by what
latex calls "baselineskip" - which is a font parameter. If you select a
different font, that distance will change too.

The default fonts on 9.1 are "SuSE sans", SuSE's own modification of
the bitstream vera font family. One of the big differences is a much
larger baselineskip. You can get very short menues by selecting "vera
sans" instead (K control centre, somewhere). For the slightly
not-so-sharp-in-sight the vera line distance is too small, but SuSE
overdid it.

Neat too, but would only affect the panel/kmenu line heights, not the
menues in all KDE programs.
