Good to know that Suse is as bad as Fedora and Debian (^:OK, the story so far......
rpm -Uvh * reported that missing dependencies were libjack.so.0
so I persevered with YaST eventually found a suitable mirror address at http://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9. 1/yast-source/
and then choosing, in YaST, "System Update" (not "Install and Remove Software")
but that reports the same dependency problem.

What are the recommended methods to upgrade KDE (to version 3.3) on SuSE
9.1?
Crank up YOU and point it to the supplementary directory for 9.1, on any suitable mirror. Note that the supplementary tree is officially unsupported. Call it SuSE testing. Subscribe to suse-kde (mailing lists page on SuSE's website) for problems which have already been solved.
rpm -Fvh *
The -F restricts package installation to those which are already installed, i.e. you use for installing updates. Not a good idea here, because if the package names for kde 3.3 have changed or there are new ones then you're missing out, getting a problematic system.

I just keep trying until they get their act sorted out their end. Sometimes just attempting a subset works, but probably not too good an idea in this case...
