thanks volker, sorry to take so long to get back, busy with a few other things until the weekend. using the rescue mode worked ok & and after using yast to uninstall new kernel & re-install old kernel all worked fine. when going through the rescue process there were a heap of error messages along the lines of "fatal error...perhaps you need to upgrade your kernel"...
anyway at least i'm back in the linux world, perhaps i can get down to a meeting again & get help with a kernel update with some expert help available.
cheers & thanks again

Doesn't ring a bell with me. The kernel is well booted by then. Btw if you don't have isdn, you can turn off / uninstall all that capi stuff. It's there and on by default because *everyone* in Europe has isdn.

Boot from CD 1 and select "boot installed system", I think this boots
the kernel from the CD. If it gets stuck at the same place, it's not a
kernel problem.

Keep in mind that the huge advantage of booting the rescue system from
CD 1 is that you can remove the CD afterwards. You can use this to
downgrade packages to those on the CDs if you need to. Knoppix is a dead
end here until you work out how to get the files onto hard disk first.
Well assuming you only have one CD drive.

If all that doesn't help we'd need more info about in what software
part exactly it's getting stuck.
