Here are some of the things that confused or frustrated me (and in some cases still do) as an experienced windows "hacker" becoming a linux "newbie": 1. The file system structure (very different to windows) 2. Connecting to a windows network, then sharing and accessing files with other machines 3. Permissions, and chmod 4. Installing software - downloading the right file (not the src file!), how to install it (command line? double-click something?) and where should it go? (This is all very different from windows) 5. All the command line stuff - OK, there are certain command commands, but the switches that go with them seem infinitely varied. So I've got to learn about man pages. I'm starting to see the usefulness of grep and piping to somewhere else. This is all a pretty steep learning curve when starting from the bottom! 6. The whole command line versus gui thing. I could (arguably) do (almost) anything in windows via a gui and now I've got the option in some cases. In other cases only the command line. 7. Patching/updating
I'd love to see material on all or any of this, unfortunately I am possibly double booked now and may or may not be able to attend for an hour. I was going to do a theme like " what to do when you first sit >down at your linux computer" - although most of my listeners may be past >that stage and wanting a few intermediatish tips. As a raw new comer, ANYHTING would be welcome. Having said that, some kind of logical overview as a means of helping myself would be good. You know, where to get info to solve a basic problem, how to understand the info when you get it... For example, i had fun and games over the weekend trying to find out how to change the name of the computer. Sure, you all know to edit the /etc/hostname file (I think!! can't remember now!), but I didn't' and spent a good hour and a half on the internet googleing the wrong questions until I finally got there. Good sites for info, tutorials, etc having said all that, I'm not even sure if I can make it!!!!! I though the meeting was later in the month and my wife might be busy leaving me to hold the baby... hope to be there Leif -- -------------------------------------------------------------- This email was sent using Telecom SchoolZone. www.schoolzone.net.nz This email has been scanned for viruses by Telecom SchoolZone, but is not guaranteed to be virus-free. --------------------------------------------------------------
