Looks to me like you didn't install the boot loader again properly after installing the kernel. If you use lilo, you must reinstall it each time you change the kernel. With grub you just do nothing. If the problem is that you didn't manage to compile your kernel properly, as someone suggested, you should be using a kernel supplied by your distro if you don't know how to compile a kernel which gets as far as booting.
