I got the problem sorted.
Thank you Steve.

My main question was to do with the K3B issue. But your points about some of the Mandrake setup tools ring some bells :-/

Have you been playing with /etc/X11/XF86Config (XF86Config-4 or xorg.conf depending on release level )?
Yes I did play with it to get my NVidia driver to go.

Are you moving back to a 2.4 kernel from 2.6, and are using SATA disks...?
No,that wasn't the problem either
<snip>

The other thing is that all of your module support tools have changed between 2.4 and 2.6. I have had little success in reverting once upgrading them. Maybe building in the core support you need, rather than using modules is a way forward??

These points you make are more likely to be where the problem for my setup lies.

I think that Mandrakes setup for some (surprising) programs occasionally writes stuff to various config files. (e.g. K3B) Or it may be some config program that I ran sometime that made K3B choke.

The file that was the apparent problem was security.conf somewhere in the /etc area.

It had apparently changed an entry to do with <dri>

I commented it out and everything leapt into life.

Will either need to spend time sussing out what the hell dri is and whether I need to have it set up properly or change my setup (distro and internet connection) to something a little less flaky.
