If I ever did this, everything would be open and documented. I would rely heavily on existing works done by others, much of it GPL, so I wouldn't even be allowed to distribute it except under GPL. The database, if I did this, would serve mail in existing protocols, as well as the new maildb-uber-sql. Hey, I don't really have time to do this project, and I'd look into existing solutions like the ones you mentioned. But still - if I win lotto and can quit my real job for a while ....
