Yesterday I picked up an HP LaserJet 4 Plus from Molten Media for $150.
They threw in a JetDirect card for free.

They've still got a LaserJet 4 (not plus) sitting on the shelf.

I plugged it into the LAN switch, while tailing /var/logs/messages on
the IPCOP box (which is also my DHCP server).
After much twiddling with the buttons on the printer (in a semi-random
fashion) I finally got a few lines on /var/log/messages informing me
that some new device had been assigned 192.168.1.2 by the DHCP server.

I then tried to add a new printer in Mandrake 10. The Mandrake printer
control thingy said it searched the LAN and found no new printers -
bugger!

I finally found an advanced setting in the printer set-up thingy, that
let me specify an IP address for an lpd server. I did so and voila - A
Mandrake Test Page came out of the printer.

So, for $150 I now have a networked laser printer that works with Linux.

Yuri - a happy geek
