I cheerfully plugged my sister-in-law's DSC-P8 (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0302/03022405sonyp8p10.asp) into my box, confidently expecting to download snaps the way I do from my own Canon S45.
I have since discovered that the P8 is not supported (http://gphoto.org/proj/libgphoto2/support.php), which seems a bit of an oversight.
What to do?

have you tried digikam? works great wiith my sony DSC-P72
I see the P5-ptp mode is listed, might be worth a shot
Yes, I have thanks. The photo-album program is independent of the photo-download mechanism - DigiKam uses some other app, I can't remember which, but it is subject to all the same issues already discussed, I believe. I think it might use gphoto2, as I am, and yes, the P5 is listed.
I'm using the excellent gThumb for sorting photos into albums, captioning, etc.
