Konqueror has the ability to use shortcuts that take you to a search or other site. Mozilla and its offspring firefox have "keywords" that do a similar thing.
Konqueror =========
Click on the "Settings" Menu then "Configure Konqueror".
In the resulting dialog scroll down the left hand side until you get to "Web Shortcuts".
You can look at any of the many existing ones by clicking on it and choosing "Change". This will give you an idea of the format used.
To create our new shortcut click on "new" and fill out the box like this:
Search Provider Name: Google Linux Search URI: http://www.google.com/linux?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&[EMAIL PROTECTED]&btnG=Google+Search URI shortcuts:gl
Click "OK"
For the "Name" and "Shortcuts" you can use anything you like, the
shortcut is what you type in to the address bar to do the search.
Try it, type (without the quotes) "gl:new zealand" into either:
1. the alt-f2 run command dialog; or 2. the konqueror address bar.
mozilla & firefox =================
mozilla/firefox keyword's are pretty cool too. I did this on mozilla, but i understand firefox works the same (although i don't have it on this box to check).
in mozilla/firefox choose Bookmarks menu|Manage Bookmarks (ctrl-b shortcut)
click File menu|New|Bookmark
fill it out like this:
Name: Google Linux Search Location: http://www.google.com/linux?hl=en&lr=&q=%s&btnG=Google+Search Keyword: gl
Again the Name and Keyword are up to you.
Click "OK"
Now in the mozilla/firefox address bar try the same trick, except with mozilla/firefox you don't need the colon between the shortcut and the search, just a space like: "gl new zealand"
Disclaimers ===========
None of this is new or startling, but a few people seemed not to have
heard of google linux or konqueror shortcuts.
I don't know a lot about encodings (ISO-8559 and friends). The konq shortcut above included "&ie=ISO-8859-1" because konqueror put it there when i did a google linux search. I just copied the url. If anyone can improve that, or sees the need for any other changes then, well, thats what the list is for.
