Spoke too soon. Logged in... great. But no mouse, no response to anything but the power button. Back to 2.6.8.1

Turns out that it was a problem with the modules. Looks like I forgot to clean out the /lib/modules/2.6.9 directory from my previous attempts with -rc4 before I started! rm -rf, followed by make modules_install, and all is well.
