this is a note of thanks to all those that replied to my questions the other day on where to get a pc and what linux flavour people like. I ended up getting almost exactly what I wanted ( 80Gb hd, 2.4Ghz, 17" monitor, sadly cdr - no dvd ) from Computer Broker for a price my finances could stand. I took a trip to the library and got a copy of fedora core as that was the most recent one available and have just installed it.
To get it on I had to destroy the single XP partition, which has lost me the windows motherboard sound drivers ( having real trouble finding them online ). Just this minute I finished the Linux install and to my immense surprise I have sound, it also configured my monitor without any issues, unlike XP :). I suspect I shall probably regret making a 60GB Win:20Gb Linux hd partition especially as I now need a copy of SP2...
I look forward to having faces to put to names at the meeting, and if anyone has a Gentoo Universal LiveCD - can I arrange to get a copy?
thanks again all
Andy
