You can use a lot of the GNU Linux tools by running Cygwin on a Windows PC, and a lot of other UNIX apps and Linux apps have been ported. I run it on Windows boxes whenever I have to use one, because I prefer working with command line interfaces. Have you considered Cygwin? While I was changing over from Windows to Linux, I used tools like VNC and Windows-based X servers. I started off with a cheap Linux PC made from spares running under my desk with no monitor, and logging in to it through Windows. Eventually they swapped places, and now the Windows PC is only ever used to build apps using tools that don't have Linux support. Mostly, that's PocketPC Java native libraries these days.
