I've been bitten in a similar way when writing scripts to manually mount
usb drives - had to stick a sleep in between loading the relevant
modules and mounting the device.

short answer: the modem is driven ok by the slmodem drivers,
specifically version 2.9.9, on ubuntu linux (kernel 2.6.8.1-3)
I think I will do a short howto as there is absolutely no info out there
on getting this laptop modem going with linux. I'll submit it to the
usual places for further posterity.
One point worthy of note - the slmodem tarball contains a debian startup
script for placing in /etc/init.d, and symlinking to the normal debian
runlevel directories. The script basically does two things, loads the
slamr.ko module and then starts the slmodemd daemon which needs to run
for the driver to work. Trouble was it was only doing the first half. I
finally put a "sleep 3" in the script between the module loading and the
daemon starting, it seems that on a 2.2 GHz laptop it was not finishing
loading the module beofre the next bit ran, meaning the second part
failed. The script worked fine after that.

Hi ya'll... :)
Success! Profuse thanks go to Nick for getting the modem
figured/configured in Linux/ubuntu... ;) So, the NEC Versa C160 can be
configured okay to run under Linux... :) Knew it should... and does! So,
Microsoft get relegated (appropriately) to the toilet region! Good on ya
Nick! And, thanks to the group... for all the support/help. ;) Bravo! Just a
few things still to figure/configure with ubuntu... :$ Oh my God! Help! Yes,
patience... :)

Hi,
The scanModem.txt results posted to this list this morning have been
sent to the linmodems list (as per Nick's request)... Hopefully they
will
get back soon... :$ Greed is certainly a TERRIBLE thing! Not nice at
all!
Fortunately not everyone is greedy... :) Only a few very miserly rascals
in
this world... :$ Oh, Nick, can we not figure/configure it based on the
advice/results given in the scanModems.txt document?
the difficulty is that the softmodem codec does not appear to be
recognised.
