Check out Synaptic.
When you know how the updater works, install Quanta Plus (c12MB?) - it's a great HTML/text editor. But c20-30MB of KDE libraries are required to run it as well, so it's a late-night job.
Sound issues are an added level of complexity you'll need specific help to resolve, later.

Hello people!
Nick, please refresh me on this... The modem lights are not the main issue right now, but it would not hurt to set them up anyway. Right it's still tripping out with the GUI dialler, as well as other issues.
It is possible that the GUI dialer is conflicting with wvdial... which is causing the problem with the GUI dialer not activating. So, the question is, what to do? We know that wvdial works okay (otherwise this message, generated/sent in ubuntu, would not be being read right now), so that's not the issue with the dial-up situation here. The modem is basically working fine... (thanks for the help with that Nick). Basically the main issue is to get things set up for doing the tasks which were all done (and may still need to be done) under the other operating system. Found a really nice lookin' (Open Source) WYSIWYG html editor @ http://www.nvu.com/, which looks similar to the software that has been used in the other operating system, but haven't yet figured out how to successfully download and install it (help!). Such a program is required/necessary in order to replace the program used until now. Otherwise it's back to the other operating system... :( Hopefully NVU can embed audio into a site (which the other operating system's WYSIWYG html editor can do, even though it is a rather old version). As a newbie, obviously these problems/issues need to be resolved with the help of experienced users and developers, which is the reason for being involved with this group. Hence, all help is very much welcome in getting this Ubuntu/Linux system operating sufficiently so as to be able to do what has been developed under the other operating system (which the whole world has, no doubt, well and truly heard more than enough about). So, thank you again for all the help, and thanks to Nick for helping to at least get the modem up and running. Again all help is welcome, and necessary, to make this Ubuntu/Linux operating system adequate for the tasks at hand. Wishing well for all.
