Depends on the list server, but some delay in auto-unsubscribe is sensible to cope with temporary mail delivery problems (e.g. your ISPs mail server down for a few hours). In any case you're putting the burden on the list server, and are relying on its good will for staying subscribed. There's also some chance that some human wades through all the bounces.
