kontact is a wrapper for kmail and knode and a few other things as well.  Fo 
to Settings->Configure kmail, then to the Network part.  (I presume you've 
already entered your Identity in the Identities section?)  Then Add your 
details, using the Add button, putting in the ISP stuff, etc.

Then click apply and go through Appearance, Composer, Security, and Misc, 
confiuring as you wish.

At least that's how I work it in my Mandrake box.  I haven't yet tried SuSE, 
so YMMV, but not by much.

I don't bother installing a mail server.  At the moment I don't have any need 
for it.  I also turn off all services I don't need - helpful when there's a 
lot of Networked Script Kiddies with deranged ideas of redistribution of my 
time and patience.
