Actually, you shouldn't have read as far as you did. ;-)
I think 65 characters is pretty narrow too. I use a 72 character limit, but then I also reflow the quoted portions of messages, so I don't need to worry about the quotation characters pushing the line length over something acceptable to 80-column terminal users.

Latex wraps at 66 characters. The "not so short introduction to latex" explains this is because readability of lines of text decreases significantly after this length. Hence newspaper columns being narrow etc.
